CENTERVILLE

Fire department testing fire hydrants

Spring hydrant testing is under way in Centerville and Washington Twp. through Friday, May 27. During testing, the Washington Township Fire Department flushes hydrants to make sure adequate water flow and pressure are available in the event of a fire.

Flushing also helps clear pipes of mineral deposits, which can accumulate over time and affect the quality of water. However, brownish water can be a temporary side effect if a home’s tap is turned on during flushing. Residents who notice discolored water are advised to run cold water until it clears.

To avoid the possibility of fabric stains, wait to do laundry until the water runs clear and, as an added precaution, wash a load of dark clothes before whites. If laundry appears stained, don’t put it in the dryer. Instead, rewash the load using a rust remover product specifically for laundry. Never use bleach as it will set rust stains.
