December has been a busy month for one Dayton area suburb. As the year draws to a close, Kettering continues to make headlines as new restaurants open, businesses expand, and a celebrated resident approaches a milestone. Below are five more stories from Kettering this month.

1. Kettering company to expand, hire 60 new employees

Vivial, previously named the Berry Co., will hire 60 new full and part-time positions over the next few months as the company expands its headquarters at 3100 Research Blvd. The advertising technology company’s expansion will add a new outbound call center to the facility.

2. Grismer to open new Kettering store by spring

The auto service company Grismer Tire & Auto Service, which purchased property at 4125 Wilmington Pike back in early 2015, plans to open a new 6,800-square foot building on the land by May 2017.

3. Downtown restaurant scrapped, owners going to Kettering instead

Elizabeth Wiley and Jenn DiSanto have scrapped plans for a new downtown sandwich shop and catering business and will now open Sagecraft, a catering business, in the old DiSanto’s Fresco Foods building at 3141 Far Hills Ave. They also plan to expand into the space that currently holds Weber Jewelers, which announced in November that it would be closing.

4. Suspected serial bank robber faces federal charges

Michael J. Stathas was arrested on Dec. 29 by police in connection with a robbery at the Key Bank at 20 W. Whipp Rd. in Washington Twp. Strathas is also suspected of robbing the Fifth Third Bank at 4120 Far Hills Ave. in Kettering on Dec. 23 and attempting to rob the same Fifth Third on Dec. 27.

5. Beloved retired Kettering mayor nears 90

Marilou Smith, who served as Kettering’s mayor for 8 years until her retirement in 2005, turns 90 on Jan. 18. Before she was mayor, she served on Kettering City Council for eight years.
