Darren was killed in a pickup truck accident.
Last week, the family relived the tragedy when three local teens were seriously injured in an accident on the same stretch of road.
“If Darren’s death helps somebody, I mean changes somebody, I don’t want to say it’s worth it, because that’s not the right words,” she said. “I just want people to know what we went through. This has to stop. When is enough enough? These kids think they’re invincible and they’re not.”
On Wednesday, March 31, Zachary Elam, 16, a junior at Madison High School, and Mara Wocher and Sabrina Tannreuther were injured when witnesses and the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Elam was “hill-hopping” at a high rate of speed on Franklin-Madison Road.
Elam’s car, a maroon 2001 Chrysler 300 M, estimated at traveling 70 to 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, veered off the road, sideswiped a mailbox and utility pole, glanced off a tree — the same tree the truck carrying Darren hit — and flipped several times before resting against a fence.
Elam and Wocher were ejected, and Tannreuther was thrown into the driver’s seat.
Just a few feet from the accident sits a white cross, a memorial to Darren Lewis.
All three were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Tannreuther was released on Thursday. Elam was listed in critical condition and Wocher in fair condition Saturday, according to hospital officials.
