Murder-suicide leaves two men dead and child injured

DAYTON — An on-going argument between cousins ended Tuesday night in a murder-suicide, leaving the cousins dead and a 10-year-old relative injured, according to police.

The shootings started in front of the Kings Court Apartments at 3754 Kings Highway shortly after 8 p.m. The dead were identified as Anthony P. Smith Jr. 34, of Clement Avenue and Christopher P. Ivy, 21, who lived at the Kings Highway address in Apartment 132.

Homicide Sgt. Dan Mauch said Smith and Ivy had been arguing off and on through the evening. He said Ivy had been drinking and making a scene at a peewee football practice where Smith, his 10-year-old son and the 10-year-old victim were attending. Smith told Ivy to knock it off, and the four left together in Smith’s car when practice ended.

Witnesses said Smith dropped Ivy off in front of his apartment and left, only to be called back by Ivy for a ride somewhere. When Smith returned, he and Ivy had words, and Ivy shot him numerous times with a .40-caliber pistol, Mauch said. Ivy fled to his apartment where he shot himself.

One of the bullets fired by Ivy struck the car where the two boys were sitting in the back seat. The 10-year-old victim was hit in the hip, Mauch said. He said the child also was related to the cousins. The boy was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital and released that night.

Police do not know what the argument involved, though “it probably came down to someone feeling disrespected,” Mauch said.
