2 named adult ed Teachers of the Year

Two Middletown teachers have been named Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education.

Paula Mehl and Karen Rummler were honored during Monday’s school board meeting. The pair were presented with plaques recognizing them for their achievement from the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives.

“The Middletown program has received other honors in previous years, so I’m not surprised that they were selected,” said board president Marcia Andrew. “But it’s really nice recognition for all their work. It just shows what a resource the adult education program is to the Middletown community.”

“This is a great honor,” said Mehl, who teaches at multiple sites within the Butler Tech-Middletown adult education system, including classes at the Miami University Middletown campus.

“Karen and I both started our teaching careers together in the 1970s, and now our careers have come 360 degrees,” she said. “We’ve been teaching together for close to 30 years.”

Rummler teaches adult basic literacy skills classes at the Atrium Medical Center. She also teaches classes to Atrium employees.

“Both teachers exemplify the spirit of our adult education program,” Kesselring said. “There’s 30 people who serve or are employed by the program. These people aren’t making a living by doing this program, they do it for the community’s benefit, because they are passionate about helping other people’s lives. … Pam and Karen embody the spirit of the whole group.”

Middletown is in the final year of directly operating its adult education program. Beginning next school year, the program will continue to be taught at several locations throughout Middletown and Butler County, but it will be operated by Butler Tech.
