New walkway, cycling access near Dayton Mall to open this week

A $1.8 million pedestrian traffic access route near the Dayton Mall is set to be completed this week.

The creation of the pathway on Lyons Road and Ohio 741 just south of the mall in the Miami Crossing District has been more than three years in the making and will beef up safety for those making their way over the Lyons bridge over Interstate 75, according to the township.

“Safety is a real priority along Lyons Road. It is a heavy traffic area and we want to be sure people who ride their bikes and walk along that stretch are safe,” said Jill Drury, Miami Twp. communications coordinator.

“We have a lot of residents of nearby apartment complexes that walk along Lyons Road every day to reach Miami Crossing businesses,” she added. “They will now have a wide walkway to use as well as a barrier between themselves and traffic on the I-75 overpass.”

The Miami Crossing District - a development area around the mall where the township and Miamisburg share tax revenue - includes shopping, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues key to that business corridor.

Miami Twp. officials plan a 9:30 a.m. Friday celebration at the Lyons Road bridge. The event had been set for Thursday, but has been pushed back due to weather, according to the township.

The project includes asphalt and concrete paths along Lyons from Byers Road — including across the overpass to I-75 — to the state route, where a sidewalk has been added on the west side across from the mall, officials have said.

Specific work, according to the township, includes:

•A 10-feet wide asphalt walk along the south side of Lyons from Byers, excluding the bridge;

•A 14-feet wide path along the south side of the Lyons bridge over I-75 will allow for a barrier across the bridge;

•An eight-feet wide concrete walk along the west side of Ohio 741 from Lyons to connect to an existing walk to allow for safer pedestrian access, and

•Curbs and gutters.

The township began planing this project in 2016. About $1.06 million of the project is coming from a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant through the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission, officials said.

Miami Twp.’s share of the cost is coming from funds generated by the area’s Tax Increment Financing District, officials have said.
