A New York teenager had a request for his chemotherapy treatments. Butler County fire departments responded.

Several Butler County communities, including the city of Fairfield, sent fire department T-shirts to a New York teenager battling cancer who asked for shirts from departments around the country to wear during his chemotherapy treatments.

Timothy Richardson is a 16-year-old Maryvale High School junior in the Buffalo, N.Y. area and is a part of the Hy-View Fire Company's Explorer program, according to the Buffalo NBC affiliate WGRZ. He was diagnosed with t-cell Leukemia in the first week of this month, according to the station.

While Richardson receives chemotherapy treatments, he wants to wear a different T-shirt from a fire department each day, according to WGRZ. He expects to be in Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo for at least the next month.

Fairfield Fire Chief Don Bennett said he became aware of the Richardson’s story from some friends through Facebook. He said surviving a disease like cancer “is all about the attitude.”

“I can’t imagine being that age and battling a life-threatening disease,” Bennett said. “If taking 10 minutes to put a T-shirt in an envelope puts a smile on his face, and gives some encouragement from people pulling for him, it was worth the investment.”

Liberty, Ross and West Chester townships are also sending T-shirts to Richardson.

Richardson told WGRZ that he has dreamed of being a firefighter, and seeing the outpouring of support from departments already “really gives you a sense of pride.”

“It’s a battle and I’m going to have to go through it,” Richardson told WGRZ. “I’ve got a lot of support of the brotherhood from the fire department and my family is all pitching in to help. So it really helps. It really does.”
