Parrot rescue seeks sponsors

For $25, bird lovers can cover cost of a month’s worth of food and care.

MORAINE — Moraine is home to 150 exotic birds that roost under the roof of Wings Over the Rainbow parrot rescue and sanctuary at 4950 Springboro Pike.

The parrot rescue center is looking for bird lovers to sponsor a parrot by making a $25 donation to cover the cost of its food and care for one month.

Sponsors can visit their parrot at the rescue center and will receive a photograph and certificate of sponsorship.

“When people say ‘eat like a bird,’ they typically mean eating light,” said Deborah Shell, founder of Wings Over the Rainbow. “(But) birds are heavy eaters and most people would be surprised to learn how much our rescues eat.”

She said parrots “tend to be wasteful as they search for their favorite treat. It’s part of their wild nature, and in the wild it helps replant the forest. Here, it means we sweep up a lot of good food and that food bill is pretty high.”

Sponsors can choose a parrot in person, on Facebook or by going online to sites.google.com/site/ wingsotr.

“Take a look at our photo albums and choose a bird. Or you can just let us choose a bird for you,” Shell said.

“We have macaws, cockatoos, Amazons, African grey parrots, love birds, cockatiels, conures and many other types of birds,” she said. “They all need care, love and food.”
