Charges have not been formally filed at this time.

According to Dayton Lt. David Mathews, officers were originally called to a home in the 600 block of Miami Chapel Road on a domestic violence complaint. When officers arrived, however, the male suspect and female resident of the home had fled.

Witnesses told police that the suspect had a firearm, and after a search police found that the two were barricaded in a vacant house in the same block. At this point, police called in the SWAT team.

According to Mathews, after some time of communicating with a bull horn, officers received a warrant to enter the house. SWAT deployed tear gas and pepper balls into the structure, causing the suspect to run out of the house, where he was taken into custody.

A subsequent search of the structure found the woman in the basement. She did not leave the home willingly, according to Mathews, and was taken into custody due to a previous warrant for her arrest on a probation violation. It is unclear whether she was being held against her will. Officers have not found a gun.

Both the man and the woman were taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries sustained before they arrived and for exposure to the chemical munitions.

Detectives will be finishing the survey of the house and searching for the gun that the man was said to have.

This is not the first time officers have been in a standoff at this location. Officers responded to the same address in October 2018, arresting a man on charges of stabbing a woman.

The call originally came in as a domestic, a dispatcher said, but it seems to have escalated to a standoff. However, police at the scene are referring to it as a “situation.”

The street is taped off, there are at least five police cruisers and a K9 at the scene. Police officers have on armor gear and are carrying rifles, and they are using flash bangs.

There’s a man and a woman in the home that police have surrounded, but the woman is not considered to be a hostage, according to police scanner traffic.

The male has been in contact with police for some time, and he knows he is under arrest, according to scanner traffic.

We have a photographer on the scene, and we’ll bring you the latest information as soon as it’s available.
