Pickup struck by train after it was stuck at crossing gates

Driver apparently tried to back up; truck lands 30 yards from intersection

MIDDLETOWN — A driver of a pickup truck survived serious injuries when his vehicle was struck by a train around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Central Avenue and University Boulevard.

William Miller, 23, of Somerville, apparently pulled his red Ford Ranger pickup truck too far into the railroad crossing and got his vehicle stuck under the crossing bar as the southbound Norfolk Southern train approached, according to police.

Miller, according to witnesses, tried to back up his vehicle, but once he realized it was too late, he tried to exit the driver’s side of his truck.

His leg got stuck in the truck as the train hit his vehicle, a witness said. His truck was flipped onto its top and landed about 30 yards from the intersection.

The train traveled about 350 feet from the accident, estimated Lt. Scott Reeve of the Middletown Division of Police.

Representatives from the railroad would not comment because the accident was under investigation.

Miller was treated at the scene by Middletown paramedics for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

He was transported to Atrium Medical Center, but late Wednesday was no longer listed as a patient.

University Boulevard and Central Avenue remained closed for several hours.

While the train was stopped on the tracks, the warning bells were ringing. The crossing guard arm was mangled in the accident.
