Police: SUV speeding in crash with Dayton school bus taking kids from Bengals event

An SUV was traveling at a high-rate of speed when the driver crashed head-on into a Dayton Public Schools bus on Salem Avenue and sent at least eight people to area hospitals, according to a Dayton police crash report.

The bus was transporting students from the Cincinnati Bengals practice event at Welcome Stadium to Edwin Joel Brown Middle School, said Alex Kincaid with Dayton Public Schools.  Kincaid declined further comments since the police investigation is still open.

Ten people, including nine juveniles, were in the SUV while 12 people were in the school bus in the Saturday afternoon crash, officers logged in the report.

Police said the SUV’s driver, identified in the report as Utosha Taste, 43, of Dayton, was at fault in the crash. The report did not make clear whether she will be charged.

The 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling about 50 mph in a 35-mph zone when the crash happened on Salem Avenue, south of Cornell Drive, according to investigators.

Police said the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver “apparently lost control,” went across the center line and hit the bus head on.

Officers estimated the bus was traveling about 35 mph in the 35-mph zone, according to the report.

Taste was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and was listed in fair condition Monday morning, according to a hospital representative.

The passengers in the SUV ranged from 1-week-old to 17 years old, investigators said. Police said it was unknown if seat belts or child safety seats were used by most of the passengers in the SUV, according to the report.

The juvenile victims in the SUV were taken to Miami Valley and Dayton Children’s hospitals. Their conditions were not available.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the maximum seating capacity of a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer is five people.

The bus was occupied by 12 people, including the driver identified as Cherise Grimes, 25, of Dayton, according to the crash report. Grimes was taken to Grandview Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately known.

All 11 bus passengers were believed to have suffered injuries. The ages of the passengers ranged from 10 years old to 14 years old, the report lists. The ages for four of the passengers were not listed.

This news outlet is working to learn the conditions of the others involved in the crash.

Previously, investigators said five children and three adults suffered injuries in the crash.
