It should come as no surprise that one local establishment — part 3D printing lab, part coffee shop, and part bar — is being recognized for its strides in innovation.
Proto BuildBar, located at 534 E. 1st St. in Dayton, as been chosen as a finalist for the SXSW 2016 Interactive Innovation Awards, a program designed to recognize and celebrate the unique tech developments around the world.
Proto has been nominated in the category of Innovative 3-DIY.
According to SXSW, finalists in the Innovative 3-DIY category are picked based on "making 3D printing technology more accessible or affordable, or to the maker using such technology in new and exciting ways."
"It was incredible, exciting and completely unexpected to be nominated by SXSW," said Daniel Madero, assistant manager of Proto BuildBar. "It was meant to be — and that's great."
What did the Proto BuildBar team do to stand out nationally?
“I look at is as just reaching out to the community and giving a lot of people (access) who have not seen a 3-D printer or people who are under the assumption that this is far too complex. We are giving them an accessible option to learn about 3-D printing, and we are doing it at a rock-bottom cost.”
Winners will be announced for this year’s 19th annual ceremony on Tuesday, March 15 in Austin, TX. The awards will be hosted by NYC-based comic, actress and co-host of truTV’s “Hack My Life” Brooke Van Poppelen and musician Julian Velard.
