School supplies given to families in need by single mother in Dayton

A local mother helped families get ready to head back to school by giving out book bags and school supplies Saturday at Island Metro Park located at 101 E. Helena Street.

Danielle Anderson, a single mother, packed 100 book bags with the essentials, and also sorted by grade level, to help other single mothers with children in need of school supplies. She even funded the project out of her own pocket.

“Education is very important and it means a lot to me,” said Anderson.

“Some kids don’t have anything, so I just want to make sure they have at least a starter kit.” she continued.

Going back to school can be an exciting time of the year, but it can also be stressful dealing with supply lists.

“Being a single mom, I know how hard it can be,” said Anderson, who decided to help those who share the struggle.

“I just want to encourage our children to stay in school. I want them to have a brighter future,” she continued.

Many families came out to accept her generosity, including Dayton mother Renata Fogt.

“It’s very daunting to figure out how you’re going to make ends meet with uniforms and everything else at the same time and this takes a little of pressure off,” said Fogt.

Marcia Asher, a single grandmother, said she’ll always put the needs of her grandchildren over herself, but sometimes needs help too.

“It comes in handy, it does. Because if you know you can get this part as a gift or donation from somewhere, something else that’s on the list you have change left over to buy,” said Asher.
