The sheriff’s office responded to the south/southeastern part of DeGraff after attempts to ping the 16-year-old’s cell phone lead them to the area.

After an extensive search of the area with assistance from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol they learned the suspect was in Champaign County.

“He made a 911 call into Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and told them where he was at,” said Dodds.

He also reportedly admitted to stabbing his mother in the call.

The suspect was taken into custody around noon.

While he has not been charged at this time, Dodds said they expect to file charges after they’ done interviewing the suspect and have spoken to the prosecutor’s office.

The suspect will be held at a juvenile detention center.

The sheriff’s office is still investing what caused the stabbing, but Dodds said to his knowledge there was no fight or argument leading up to the incident.

“We’re not sure what provoked him,” he said.

The suspect was not known by the sheriff’s office prior to the stabbing and there weren’t any previous calls to the house, according to Dodds.

It’s also unclear if the 16-year-old suffered from any mental health issues.

The suspect is a student at Riverside Local Schools, which was temporarily on lockdown while investigators looked for him.

Dodds said the lockdown was a precautionary measure.

“We weren’t sure what his state of mind was at that time,” he said. “We didn’t want him to go to school and take someone hostage. He likes school so we wanted to make sure he didn’t show up there.”

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also has been requested to the scene to assist with the investigation, Dodds said.
