Today’s forecast is calling for a complex weather system to enter the Miami Valley from the south this afternoon, with a mix of snow and rain or sleet, depending on where you are. These storms are expected to linger into Thursday.

So, this morning News Center 7’s Gabrielle Enright is at the Greene County salt barn discussing how the counties prepare for winter weather, while Kayla Courvell is outside the Dayton Power & Light building discussing how you can prepare yourself.

Counties often use salt to treat icy roads. However, Gabrielle Enright spoke to Greene County Engineer Stephanie Ann Goff, who told us about how Greene County uses a beet juice product along with salt to melt ice.

The product is called “Beet Heet” and is produced using beet molasses and sugar.

Icy weather also increases the risk of power outages, whether due to vehicles striking power poles or ice building up on power lines and bringing them down. Kayla Courvell  outlined recommendations in case you are affected by a power outage.

Beforehand, put together an emergency kit. For a car kit, this can include things that you may have around the house, including a blanket, a flashlight with batteries, gloves, a coat and extra shoes, a screwdriver, a tire pressure gauge and reflectors.

Before leaving the house, you should also turn off appliances in case of a power surge when power turns back on, and if using an additional heat source like a gas fireplace make sure it is clean before turning it on.
