“This is a leased facility and the landlord will not be renewing the lease when it expires (on Dec. 13, 2017),” Van Allen said.
The post office could relocate to an address in the township in Northtown Shopping Center between the 4100 block and 4200 block of North Main Street or to a building at 2801 Philadelphia Drive in Dayton, according to Van Allen.
A relocation cost has not been determined yet.
Jack Kuntz, the township’s Development director, said he thinks the township’s residents will be better served if the new post office location is in the township.
“The parking situation at the Forest Park Postal Office is horrible. The facility isn’t maintained up to standards of some other postal services,” Kuntz said. “Wherever they go, the parking is going to have to be 20 times better.”
In the meantime, the postal service is also working on relocating the North Dayton Branch at 1411 Farr Drive to an undetermined location in the same area.
The North Dayton Branch, in Dayton, has been at the Farr Drive location since January 1967.
“In this case, the postal service is seeking to maximize the efficiency of its operations,” Van Allen said. “The North Dayton location is 71,830 square feet, which far exceeds current space requirements of approximately 1,000 square feet.”
The move for the North Dayton Branch, which has 33 employees, does not have to be completed by a specific date, according to Van Allen.
North Dayton has more employees than Forest Park because North Dayton houses city carriers and Forest Park does not, according to Van Allen.
“There will be no job losses from either relocation,” Van Allen said.
The postal service held two separate public hearings regarding these relocation projects in May.
