Vandalia and public works employees continue negotiations

The city of Vandalia and its public works employees are still negotiating a contract, but workers continue to work after planning to strike this week.

Vandalia Public Works employees reported for work as normal Monday morning after planning to strike. On Feb. 20, the union filed a notice of their intent to strike starting at 6 a.m. Monday.

The union representing the 18 employees and the city of Vandalia continue to negotiate a tentative agreement.

Union representative Alan Weeks said the public works employees will report for work Wednesday while negotiations continue.

Vandalia City Manager Jon Crusey presented a proposed agreement to city council at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. Crusey and Vandalia city council discussed the contract in executive session.

The public works department was not unionized prior to 2018, when negotiations began.

Weeks said the union is working to get a new four-year contract that would give the pulic works employees 2.5% raises in the second, third and fourth years.

“We’re hopeful we can get something worked out,” said Vandalia spokesman Rich Hopkins.
