This wasn’t how Michael Lawson, a second-grader at Wildwood Elementary School in Middletown, envisioned his 8th birthday party.

But after standing Saturday night in his driveway on Bexley Drive and waving to the 30 vehicles, including members of the Middletown police and fire departments, Michael told his parents it was his “most fun birthday ever.”

INITIAL STORY: Living through coronavirus: Shutdown means Middletown 8th birthday party will become parade

After Michael’s birthday party at Skateway was canceled due to the coronavirus, his parents, Nate and Jess Lawson, planned a birthday party parade. His mom figured a few friends and parents of her son’s classmates would drive by.

Instead, there were at least 30 vehicles in the parade, led by a Middletown Division of Fire truck with its sirens blaring, and ending with police Maj. Malcolm Tipton and Michael’s youth basketball coach.

Michael’s second-grade teacher Anedra Million drove by and gave him a large Teddy bear.

“It was awesome,” his mother said. “We were really impressed that many people came.”
