Xenia homeless shelter shuts doors for the summer

A new homeless shelter that opened temporarily in Xenia during the cold months is closing its doors for the summer.

Bridges of Hope, located at the former Simon Kenton Elementary School on West Second Street, closed on Monday as its temporary occupancy permit expired, according to the faith-based nonprofit organization's website.

The shelter will get work done over the summer to bring the old school building “up to code,” but also to allow the organization to solidify partnerships with others in the community to increase services.

“We will re-open in the fall with not just a shelter, but programs in place to help those who come through our doors sort through the layers of rebuilding their lives,” according to the shelter’s most recent newsletter.

Bridges of Hope opened days before Christmas and reports more than 80 people stayed at the shelter during the cold months.
