Road improvements are getting underway in the city of Xenia where leaders are discussing options to increase funding to do much-needed road repairs and maintenance.

Work was expected to start this week by John R. Jergenson Co. on the southern portion of Progress Drive between West Main and West Second streets.

Temporary lane closures are expected as a large section of failing pavement is replaced with new concrete. Catch basins and broken curbs will be repaired or replaced and pedestrian ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act are installed at all intersections along Progress Drive, according to a release from the city of Xenia.

The Progress Drive project is being funded through a $367,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission and $128,989 from the city’s coffers, according to the release.

Work is also underway along South Detroit Street and near downtown Xenia where a dedicated bike lane will replace the right southbound lane currently used by motorists.

City Council is scheduled to talk about the “short-term street rehab program and utility infrastructure” at a special session April 5, according to Xenia spokesman Lee Warren.
