Man shot in the back; grand jury may get the case

FORT SHAWNEE, Ohio (AP) -- A coroner says a man killed by police after a traffic stop turned violent in a mobile home park in northwest Ohio last month was shot in the back.

Allen County Coroner Gary Beasley tells The Lima News an autopsy shows 20-year-old John Sowders of Cridersville was shot in the back but it doesn't mean officers acted improperly.

Fort Shawnee police have said Sowders fought officers and cut one officer's hand with a knife. Police say officers tried to subdue Sowders with a stun gun, but it didn't work.

Two officers have been on administrative leave while the state crime lab investigates the incident. A prosecutor plans to present the case to a grand jury next week.
