Mason hotel marks fourth robbed in last six days

The Baymont Inn and Suites was robbed Monday afternoon and police here said it was similar to three recent area hotel robberies.

A male, who did not show a weapon, walked into the hotel, 2793 WaterPark Drive, just after 5 p.m., jumped the front counter and confronted the desk clerk before demanding money, Mason Lt. Jeff Burson said.

The Baymont Inn robbery is the fourth in six days. The others occurred in Middletown, Franklin and Springboro. In each incident, the suspect is black, under 6 feet tall, under 200 pounds and apparently acted alone, police in those jurisdictions have said.

In the Baymont incident, the clerk wasn’t injured but the robber took money from the cash drawer, jumped back over the counter and left the hotel, Burson said.

“We are not sure he fled on foot. We didn’t see a vehicle today,” the lieutenant said. “It appears as though he fled north and northwest on foot.”

The robber, described as wearing a black T-shirt, dark shorts and black baseball cap that read “Chicago White Sox” across its face, was not wearing gloves, Burson said. Detectives processed the scene for fingerprints and other trace evidence, and were processing surveillance video Monday night.

Extra police patrols have been assigned to hotels in the area, he said, noting the Baymont is a few feet from Interstate 71. The other hotels robbed are close to Interstate 75.

  • On Thursday, Sept. 5, a man wearing a white T-shirt and black hairdo-cap jumped the front counter at the Days Inn, 3458 Commerce Drive, Middletown, and demanded money from a clerk. The robber, who did not display a weapon, did not get any money and fled, police said.
  • The same day, about 30 minutes later, a man wearing a white T-shirt and a hat walked into the lobby of the Quail Inn Hotel, 2000 William C. Good Blvd., in Franklin, and demanded money from a clerk. He did not show a weapon, but threatened to shoot the clerk before leaving with an undetermined amount of cash, police said. Police also said witnesses told them the robber drove off in a four-door silver colored vehicle that had a body style similar to a Chevy Impala.
  • On Tuesday, Sept. 3, a man dressed in blue clothing and wearing a baseball cap with red lettering displayed a handgun when he jumped the counter at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 25 Greenwood Lane, Springboro. He got away with an undetermined amount of cash, Springboro police said.

“There are certainly some similarities,” Burson said of the recent hotel robberies. “We’re looking into that possibility” that the same man has committed each of the robberies.
