Pastor Jon Young said he smelled the odor of natural gas as congregation members were arriving for the evening church services and classes.
Young said, "It was fairly faint when I started to smell it, then it got strong very quickly, but we had the people out of the building very fast."
As the congregation evacuated, fire crews and Vectren workers showed up to the church.
Fire officials discovered melting snow on the roof caused a massive ice block to fall onto the valve of the gas line, breaking it off.
Capt. Richard Baker of the Xenia Township Fire Department said, "There was just a lot of snow and ice on the roof and it just happened to slide off and hit it [the valve] just the right way."
Church members told NewsCenter 7 they were lucky no one was injured.
Pastor Young said, "This kind of thing can get very dangerous, we've heard of situations like this where there has been explosions. ... We see this as God is gracious and this is an opportunity to thank him for keeping us safe and protecting us from something that could have happened."
Fire crews ventilated the building and say it will be safe for workers to return on Monday.
