Middletown homeless shelter residents return inside after evacuation for report of smoke in basement

The Hope House Mission in Middletown was evacuated on Thursday morning after a report of smoke in the basement, but those inside returned after a short investigation.

The evacuation started at about 8 a.m. at the facility at 34 S. Main St.

“There’s light haze, odor smoke throughout the first (floor) and basement area,” said Middletown fire chief Paul Lolli.

After an investigation, crews determined that those who were inside could return, and crews left the area by about 8:45 a.m.
