Activists set up voter registration events at ‘Black Panther’ screenings

You’ve heard of #RockTheVote — now get ready to #WakandaTheVote.

As Marvel’s “Black Panther” continues to shatter box office records across the country, activists are using screenings of the superhero flick as a platform to reach black voters.

The #WakandaTheVote campaign — named after the fictional African country in “Black Panther” — was launched by members of the Electoral Justice Project (EJP) as a way to get black voters educated and registered at screenings, particularly ahead of the November midterm elections.

The EJP was launched in October by Kayla Reed, Jessica Byrd and Rukia Lumumba as a project of the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of groups across the country.

“We will be registering people to vote at movie theaters across the country so that we can #WakandaTheVote at the ballot box,” Byrd and Reed told Blavity. “(The Movement for Black Lives is) effective because we meet our communities where they are… This weekend we wanted to meet our people in Wakanda.”

Those who want in can text WAKANDA to 91990 to register to vote, or PANTHER to 91990 to organize a registration event of their own at a “Black Panther” screening.

“We know our people will be in line to witness this historic film. We also know this November we can make historic wins at the polls and directly challenge the right wing agenda of the current administration, the MBL said on its website. “Like ‘Black Panther,’ it is our duty to protect our communities.”
