Daniel Torres, 26, was shot Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Goodyear, KNXV reported. He was taken to an area hospital in serious condition but died from his wounds, police said.
The fireworks stand reopened Thursday. Robert Dowdy said he took over for his son-in-law, who fired the shot that killed Torres, KTVK reported.
"He did what he was supposed to do," Dowdy told the television station. "His reaction was correct and he's up and going to work today, and he's got his family and they’re going to celebrate the holiday and keep going forward."
Police are still looking for a woman who was with Torres when the attempted robbery occurred, KNXV reported.
According to police, the woman, believed to be in her late 20s, was driving a gold Honda ULX with an Arizona wheelchair license plate, LAG50, KTVK reported.
