Matthew Honor told KGMB his brother was an avid surfer. He said when a large wave hit Mina and Honor tried to save his daughter, he was swept under and both were takenout to sea.
"He was just a fantastic human being. He jumped in (and) tried to save her. And I don't think he wanted to come back empty-handed," Matthew Hornor said.
Lifeguards rescued the father and daughter and administered CPR.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the two were taken to a hospital in critical condition but later died.
"On a day like (that), it wasn't for families down there," Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for the city Emergency Services Department, told KGMB. "Conditions were not favorable. It's too windy. There's a high surf advisory. It's extremely dangerous."
"We all send our condolences to that family and that's right now what we want to express," Enright said.
Honor and Mina are survived by wife and mother Jessamy and two daughters and siblings.
