California toddler dies after mom left her in hot car, drank with friend, police say

A California toddler is dead after police said she was left alone in a car as her mom and a friend drank alcohol in another vehicle.

According to KTTV, the mother parked in West Carson, turned on the heater and draped a blanket over 2-year-old June Love Agosto before joining a friend for drinks in a car parked next to hers late Sept. 21, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, told police that she fell asleep in the other car, KTTV reported. When she went back to her vehicle about 5 a.m. Sept. 22, she found June unresponsive and burned with vomit on her clothing, police said.

Authorities said the woman removed June from the car, placed her "on the grass and sprayed her with [a] water hose in an attempt to cool her down," KTLA reported.

Emergency responders drove the toddler to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined that her body temperature was 107.5 degrees, KTLA reported. She also was "in full cardiac arrest," according to KTTV.

June died Sept. 23, authorities said.

KTTV reported that the girl's mother, who previously faced drug charges, is in police custody. No further information was immediately available.
