The lion that guards Chicago’s Art Institute used to have a face mask as a symbol of protection from the COVID-19 pandemic.

But less than 24 hours after the sculpture had the mask put on the lion’s face, it was stolen.

A security guard saw two men get out of a car around 10:55 p.m. Thursday, climb the statue and swipe the mask, cutting it from the lion. The men then drove off, police told WMAQ.

Friday, it became mandatory for people in Illinois to wear masks when they're in public, WFLD reported.
