Kevin Conners, 65, appeared in court Friday, one day after he surrendered to police and posted a $50,000 bond, WTIC-TV reported. Conners told police that on Sept. 6, 2018, he held a gun to his wife's head and she pulled the trigger, according to an arrest warrant.
Lori Conners, 64, had Lyme disease and had ovarian cancer that had spread, the warrant said. She had been considering suicide for some time before she died, according to the warrant, and had survived a suicide attempt by overdose a month prior. Investigators found 13 suicide notes in the couple’s home, police said.
Kevin Conners originally told investigators he had been sleeping in another room when he was awoken by the sound of a gunshot. He later admitted to helping his wife shoot herself, the warrant said.
“It’s a difficult time for everyone,” said Raymond Rigat, Conners’ attorney. “Mr. Conners did what any loving husband would do.”
Prosecutions for assisted suicide in the state of Connecticut are not common, according to WTIC-TV.
Conners is scheduled to appear in court again July 2.
