Coronavirus: Arkansas property owner tells restaurants to pay their employees, not rent

An Arkansas property owner has some words of advice for its restaurant tenants amid the coronavirus outbreak: Don’t pay rent; pay your employees instead.

According to KAIT-TV, Jonesboro-based Young Investment Co., which rents space to several downtown restaurants, took to Facebook to share the sentiment Tuesday.

"In an effort to do our part, Young Investment Co. will not expect its restaraunt tenants to pay April rent," the post read. "We ask that you use this money instead to pay your employees and take care of your family. Stay strong. We will get through this together!"

The company's tenants include City Wok, Main Street Coffee, Eleanor's Pizzeria and other local favorites, KAIT reported.

"It just seemed like it was the right thing to do," Clay Young, the company's president and chief executive officer, said Wednesday in an interview with Arkansas Business.
