Coronavirus: St. Louis bill would punish people who cough on essential workers

Essential workers are under a lot of stress due to the coronavirus pandemic. There have been several examples of people spitting or coughing on police officers

Under legislation proposed by the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen, people who intentionally cough, sneeze or spit on an essential worker could face a fine or even jail time, KNOV reported.

According to the bill, introduced by Alderman Bret Narayan, essential workers include health care workers, first responders and grocery store workers, KMOV reported.

According to the bill, violators could face a fine between $250 and $500 and could spend up to 90 days in jail.

The bill would prohibit people from intentionally coughing, sneezing or spitting on essential workers.

If passed, the proposal would be in effect until July 1, 2021.
