A Louisiana man was arrested Friday on suspicion he set fire to a shed on his mother’s property. The alleged reason for the vandalism? He was upset he hadn’t received a stimulus check from the government, police said.

Responders from the Moreauville Fire Department arrived at the scene of the crime around 1 p.m. Friday and quickly determined that the fire had originated inside the shed. They also determined the fire had been intentionally set.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, 51-year-old Marvin Smith Jr. and his mother had argued about the status of his stimulus check before he went into the family shed. Witnesses said they saw smoke and flames soon after Smith entered the shed. Smith fled the area in an RV.

Authorities later found Smith, who was armed with a knife, and he was booked into Avoyelles Parish Jail on one count of arson. According to a release, he was later booked on multiple other charges.

The state of Louisiana has garnered attention recently for being among the states with the highest number of reported cases of COVID-19. More than 25,000 coronavirus cases have been reported across the state's sixty-four parishes.
