A Florida state senator is continuing his push to pass legislation that would keep young children from being arrested.

The amendment was introduced by Sen. Randolph Bracy, D-Orange County, following the arrest of 6-year-old Kaia Rolle at Orlando's Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy in September 2019.

The body camera video of the arrest was recently released. The officer who arrested Kaia, Dennis Turner, was eventually fired.

Originally, the proposed amendment was targeted at children under the age of 12, but after negotiations in Tallahassee and examining laws in other states, the compromise of children under the age of 10 is being pushed forward during the current legislative session.

The Florida Senate is expected to debate the new amendment to a crime bill, which would prohibit arrests of children under the age of 10 for misdemeanor crimes.
