German Carnival crash: Dozens hurt after car drives into crowd; suspect arrested

Dozens of people were hurt when a car drove into a crowd of revelers at a Carnival parade in Germany, authorities said.

According to the BBC and The Associated Press, at least 52 people were hurt when a 29-year-old man struck the crowd Monday afternoon in Volkmarsen, police said. At least 18 of the injured were children, the outlets reported.

As of Tuesday morning, 35 people were still being treated at nearby hospitals, officials said.

The suspect, who was hurt in the crash, also was taken to the hospital for treatment of head injuries, reported the AP, citing the Bild newspaper. The man is facing an attempted homicide charge, according to the BBC. Authorities have not released his name.

North Hesse police said they believe the crash was deliberate but were still trying to determine a motive, the AP reported.
