A year-old steer sold for a record $300,000 Saturday at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, WFAA reported.

Cupid Shuffle is the first Hereford champion at the north Texas show since 1982. The steer’s selling price topped the previous mark by $40,000, the television station reported.

The steer was shown by Ryder Day, 12, during the competition, to become the first Hereford champion in 38 years. The competition had been dominated by European crossbreds, stock show spokesman Matt Brockman told the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth.

Day said he and his younger brother had plans for the cash they won: a college fund and a ranch, the newspaper reported.

“It’s too much to think about,” Day told reporters. “After we pay for college, me and my brother, we’ll help build."

The junior steer competition included more than 1,500 animals in more than 40 categories, according to the Star-Telegram.
