A baby girl in Wisconsin suffered serious injuries when she was attacked by her grandmother's pet pit bull, authorities said.

According to WISN-TV, the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at a Milwaukee home. The girl's mother said the dog attacked the baby without provocation in the living room of the house, the news outlet reported. The dog also attacked the child's grandmother, who tried to intervene, the baby's mother said.

Family members were able to stop the 5-year-old pit bull after the child's uncle struck it with a cast-iron skillet, the baby's mother told WISN.

Emergency responders rushed the infant to Children's Wisconsin, fire officials said. The grandmother, whose injuries were not considered life-threatening, was treated at Froedtert Hospital, according to WISN.

Officers took the dog to a nearby shelter, the news outlet reported. No further information was immediately available.
