Great Smoky Mountains again named top national park in US

Rocky Top still remains home, sweet home for tourists in the United States.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park again was named the top national park by the National Park Service, WZTV reported. The park, which is a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains and straddles eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, attracted 12.5 million visitors during 2019, according to the National Park Service.

Grand Canyon National Park was second with 6 million visitors, WKRN reported. The parks have held the two top spots since 1990, according to the National Park Service.

While the park is popular, few visitors are venturing to the Tennessee foothills these days because of the coronavirus pandemic and stay-at-home orders.

All park areas in the Great Smoky Mountains, except for the Foothills Parkway and Spur, are closed through at least April 30, according to the National Park Service.
