KFC testing plant-based chicken nuggets, wings with Beyond Meat

KFC is the latest fast-food chain getting in on the vegan and plant-based diet trend.

CNN reported that the Yum Brands company has partnered with El Segundo, California-based Beyond Meat to offer meat-free fried chicken, called Beyond Fried Chicken, in a test run at one location in Smyrna, Georgia.

"Customer feedback from the Atlanta test will be considered as KFC evaluates a broader test or potential national rollout," KFC said in a statement to Bloomberg.

The test run will happen Aug. 27 and include plant-based nuggets and boneless wings, offered for free to customers who purchase other items.

Beyond Meat also has plant-based offerings at restaurants like Carl's Jr. and Del Taco, The Associated Press reported. Impossible Foods, the company behind the Impossible burger, teamed up with Burger King for the Impossible Whopper, which began rolling out nationally earlier this month.

The Associated Press reported that restaurants' plant-based offerings come as consumers increasingly demand meat-free meals. USA Today reported that, according to a June 2018 Nielsen report, 39% of Americans said they were trying to eat more plant-based products.
