Michael Adams, 27, walked up to the victim around 1:45 a.m., slit his throat, then left a Circle K, police said.

The victim, who has not been identified, walked outside and collapsed, KSAZ reported. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

The victim was listening to rap music in earshot of Adams, KSAZ reported. Adams told police rap music makes him feel unsafe after being attacked by people who were listening to the genre, KSAZ reported.

Adams told investigators the victim didn't say anything to provoke him but he felt the need to prevent an attack and stabbed him, KSAZ reported.

Adams suffers from a mental illness and had been released from jail without medication, his attorney told KSAZ.
