A 6-month old boy is safe after the car in which he was a passenger was stolen Sunday afternoon at an Arizona gas station while the child’s father was inside the store, authorities said.

According to Phoenix police, the vehicle was stolen from a convenience store near Interstate 17 around 3 p.m., KNXV reported.

The owner of the gray 2007 Kia Sorento told officers he had finished pumping gas and headed into the store, leaving his son in the car, KTVK reported. The man's keys were also in the car.

That is when the man said he saw the suspect get into his car and drive away, the television station reported.

Ten minutes later, an off-duty police officer found the boy in a car seat near an intersection, KNXV reported. The boy was safe, and police said the suspect fled after leaving the child on the side of the road near a Walmart.

Father and child were reunited moments later. The boy did not suffer any injuries, police said.
