A police chief in North Dakota was preparing to buy a fishing lure on his day off. Instead, he reeled a citizen in distress to safety.

David Peterson, of the Williston Police Department, pulled up to a parking lot outside Scenic Sports on Sunday.

"I went there with the mindset that I'm going to be picking up a crankbait," Peterson told the Williston Herald.

Peterson forgot about fishing when he saw a man exit a vehicle, stumble and then get knocked to the ground as the car rolled backward toward a gasoline pump, the newspaper reported.

Surveillance video at the store showed Peterson jump into the vehicle and managed to stop it, the Herald reported. Peterson then saw the man under the car and pulled him to safety.

"I think 99 percent of our community members would do the same thing," Peterson told the Herald. "Not acting was not an option.

“Our men and women are saving lives every time they go out on (a) shift."
