The officers, from the department's Strategic Response Group, were at a Whole Foods store buying their lunch when store officials called police, WABC reported.
The woman had been detained by the store's security officers because she had food in her bag she had not paid for, WPIX reported. According to a man who snapped a photo and posted the incident on Twitter, the officers dug into their wallets and helped pay the bill.
This woman was being held by security.

Chief of Department Terrance Monahan shared the photo on Twitter, saying, "Cops like Lt. Sojo and Officers Cuevas and Rivera of the Strategic Response Group are the kind-hearted cops who quietly do good deeds for New Yorkers in need. My thanks to @pboz for highlighting the often unnoticed."
