The Indiana State Department of Health approved a request from Michael C. Thompson, who is Dillinger's nephew, to disinter the body, WRTV reported. The request was made June 24 and was approved July 3, the television station reported. No reason was given for the exhumation, according to the permit.
The permit said Dillinger will be reburied at Crown Hill Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Sept. 16, WXIN reported. A spokesman for the health department said exhumation and reinterment typically occur on the same day, the television station reported.

Dillinger, who was born in Indianapolis, was gunned down outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934. He was accused of robbing 24 banks and four police stations during his criminal career.
Dillinger has been buried in Section 44, Lot 94 of Crown Hill Cemetery since 1934. The cemetery occasionally holds public tours of his gravesite, WTHR reported.
According to the permit, Light Memorial and Funeral Chapel in Monrovia is in charge of the arrangements, the television station reported. A person at the funeral home said the company is not releasing any further information.
