The mayor spoke to the media late Friday night about the heartbreak over the 13 people dead and four people injured at the workplace shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center. DeWayne Craddock, an engineer who worked for the city, has been identified as the disgruntled employee who opened fire and killed 12 people, CNN reported.
"This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach," Dyer said late Friday, according to television station WAVY.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam also shared his thoughts.
"This is a horrific day for the Commonwealth of Virginia," Northam said during a Friday night news conference.
Rapper and producer Pharrell Williams, who is from Virginia Beach, shared his thoughts on the shooting Friday via a tweet. He encouraged those mourning in his hometown to be resilient.
"We will not only get through this but we'll come out of this stronger than before we always do," he tweeted.

Williams' longtime collaborator Pusha T, whose real name is Terrence Thornton, also sent his condolences to his hometown Friday.

Vigils were planned in Virginia Beach at Regal Cinemas on Saturday morning and next week at Old Dominion University, WAVY reported.
