A man returned to his residence in southwest Houston around 11:30 p.m. and was ambushed by three suspects who pistol-whipped him and forced him inside the home, police told The Houston Chronicle.

The man’s two daughters, one age 21 and the other a child, hid inside a closet as the suspects ransacked the home. The daughters managed to hit a panic button during the burglary, police said. The suspects tried to disable the alarm, but couldn’t because the sisters kept pushing it.

A son returned to the home while the home invasion was still in progress and saw “signs of struggle” in front of the house, police told the Chronicle. He retrieved a pistol and approached the house from the back door.

The suspects began to flee the house and the son shot at them. One of the suspects, who police said was also armed with a pistol, was shot in the head. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The two other suspects stole a gray minivan from the home and fled. They haven’t been captured.

None of the victims of the home invasion were seriously hurt, police told KHOU-TV.

Police haven’t released the name of the suspect who died.
