A Louisiana man is behind bars after police said he shot and killed a U.S. postal worker who was delivering mail in Shreveport on Saturday.

According to the Shreveport Times, Michael Gentry, 32, of Shreveport, was arrested late Saturday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of mail carrier Antonio Williams.

Police believe Gentry shot Williams, 52, about 11:20 a.m. Saturday on Dudley Street, where Gentry lives, the Times reported. Williams, who suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, was taken to a nearby hospital and later died, authorities said.

Williams "was actively serving as a mailman during the time he was shot," Shreveport police Detective Angie Willhite told the newspaper. Police said they don't believe the men had been involved in a dispute.

In a Facebook post Saturday night, Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins called the incident "a senseless act of violence."

"The investigation is ongoing, but we ask that everyone keep the victim's friends and family in their prayers," Perkins wrote.

Gentry is being held at the Shreveport City Jail on $250,000 bond, KTBS-TV reported.
