Rifles, shotgun found under 8-year-old's bed in Syracuse apartment, police say

Police found several guns in a Syracuse apartment, including weapons under a bed used by an 8-year-old child.

Police in New York found four guns, including two rifles and a shotgun, under an 8-year-old's bed, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.

According to court records, Symeon Petkopoulos, 33, and Jeffery L. Washington, 43, were arrested and face multiple gun and drug-related charges after Syracuse police used a warrant to search an apartment, the newspaper reported.

Police said they found a loaded Anderson 300 Blackout assault rifle capable of holding 30 rounds of ammunition in Petkopoulos' bedroom, the Post-Standard reported. The rifle was found between a bed and wall and was zippered inside a case, detectives wrote in an arrest report.

Officers found a .22 caliber Chipmunk rifle under the 8-year-old's bed, along with a 12-gauge shotgun, the Post-Standard reported.

A .22-caliber bolt action Ruger rifle was found in Washington’s room, according to court records. Police said none of the safety locks were secured on the guns.

Police also found cocaine and marijuana in the apartment, the Post-Standard reported.

According to the Onondaga County inmate database, Petkopoulos is being held in lieu of $300,000 bond. He was charged with two counts of third-degree possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of marijuana.

Washington is being held without bail and was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of marijuana.
