KIRO-TV's helicopter was overhead as the poodle, named Monkey, was clinging to his owner. The shooting happened shortly after noon.
The suspect was in the stolen truck when two detectives in plainclothes spotted it with the dog inside, deputies said.
According to deputies, the suspect rammed their vehicle with the stolen truck. Deputies said they then fired shots while the suspect was sitting in the car.
The suspect died at the scene. The deputies and dog were uninjured, officials said.
The truck and poodle were stolen from a Cenex gas station in Black Diamond on Friday afternoon about 4 p.m.
"They're inseparable. Every day, Carl says, 'You ready to go to work?' And he (the dog) hops in the truck," Stefanie Sanders, who owns Monkey with her husband, Carl Sanders, told KIRO-TV.
As of Monday afternoon, deputies had not released the identity of the man who was fatally shot.
Over the weekend, deputies said the suspect believed to be involved was Anthony Chilcott, 36. Deputies said surveillance video showed Chilcott stealing the truck.
As the suspect took off, the gas nozzle was ripped away from the pump. In the video, Monkey can be seen in the passenger seat.
“I ran outside and there was my truck taking off with my dog looking straight at me,” Carl Sanders said. “Gas going all over, and he almost ran over a couple of people and flew out onto the highway."
Carl and Stefanie Sanders were devastated that a member of their family had been stolen. Family photos showed the Sanders' bond with their pup.
Black Diamond police said they had just arrested Chilcott on Oct. 28 on an outstanding warrant. They said he tried to run and officers ran after him.
Charging documents say that after officers took him into custody, Chilcott resisted arrest, attempted to break out of the patrol vehicle, repeatedly kicking the door and caused several thousand dollars worth of damage.
Chilcott was booked into the King County Jail but was released on Nov. 13 -- 10 days before deputies say he stole the Sanders’ truck and dog.
