He is a 5th grade teacher at Oakhaven Elementary School.
According to the affidavit, a complaint was made against Straughter on Dec. 6 alleging that he had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy between July 2018 and August 2019.
Straughter was placed on paid administrative leave Dec. 10, according to the school system, and the allegations do not involve students at Oakhaven.
He was charged on Dec. 18.
“You have guys out here that should be a better male role model but instead they choose to….it’s sad man. Sad. Devastating,” a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said.
Straughter has been employed with the district since July 2013, according to Shelby County Schools.
Shelby County Schools media relations released a statement that said in part:
“Student safety is our top priority, and we always take any report involving allegations against employees very seriously. Families at Oakhaven ES are being informed of the investigation and that the allegations do not involve students at their school. Oakhaven ES staff will ensure students in Straughter’s class are fully supported while this matter is being investigated.”
